Microsoft releases new update for Windows 10 users

Microsoft has already announced that no new updates will be released for Windows 10 users as part of the Windows Insider Program, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the company isn't willing to fix bugs and other issues found in the operating system.

Today, the company has introduced an important patch for Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9879 that comes to address some widespread issues in File Explorer and causing crashes at random times on these computers.

We haven't experienced any issues with Explorer until now, and build 9879 has actually been running quite smoothly on our test machines, but given the number of complaints received from users, it's very likely that this was a common problem brought by the latest Windows 10 build.

Delivered via Windows Update

As is the case with all the other Windows 10 updates, this new patch is being shipped to users via Windows Update, so no input is required on computers running this particular operating system version.

Keep in mind that Windows 10 comes with two different update systems, one for patches and updates and identical with the other Windows Update feature available in previous Windows version, and another one that allows the installation of new builds and releases shipped as part of the Windows insider Program.

This new patch rolled out by Microsoft requires a computer reboot, and although running Windows 10 on stable systems isn't recommended, the company advises anyone on this new OS version to save their work before anything else.

Next update coming in January

The next full update for Windows 10 Technical Preview is scheduled to be shipped in January 2015, when Microsoft could also bring us the very first Consumer Preview build as part of a press conference hosted by the company late next month.

Windows 10 Consumer Preview will come with quite a lot of new features, including an early build of Cortana, the personal assistant that has until now been available on Windows Phone exclusively and which should also arrive on the PC with Windows 10.

Cortana references are already available in Windows 10 Technical Preview, but the feature isn't yet ready for the public, so the Consumer Preview build scheduled to go live next month could make it available for everyone testing the product.

Windows 10 is scheduled to be launched in mid-2015, so Microsoft should have enough time to fix bugs and address any performance issues that users come across in the Consumer Preview build.
