Microsoft shares new data about the Windows Insider Program

Microsoft launched the Windows Insider Program in early October to provide users with access to the newest technical previews of Windows 10, and until now, this particular campaign has proven to be quite a successful effort.

New statistics provided by Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider Program, reveal that no less than 1.5 million people have actually installed Windows 10 through this program, but the number of those who have actually given the technical preview a try could be even bigger if we take into consideration the number of ISO downloads as well.

Out of the 1.5 million users who have installed Windows 10, no less than 450,000 are considered to be “highly active,” as they are most likely running the technical preview every day and sending feedback on a regular basis.

“It’s terrific for us to see this, because that hardcore usage will help us fix all the rough edges and bugs. The reports you send us, both from automated things like crash logs and manually via the Windows Feedback app, are helping us shape the product,” Aul explained.

1,300 bugs fixed with user input

Since early October, when the Windows Insider Program officially kicked off with Technical Preview build 9841, Microsoft has fixed no less than 1,300 bugs, most of them found and reported by users.

A graph provided by Gabriel Aul reveals that build 9841 had the biggest number of bugs, but nearly 800 of them have already been fixed, while about 200 continue to be active. As far as 9860 is concerned, Microsoft has managed to find a fix for more than 600, while in 9879, the company has addressed over 200 bugs out of a total of nearly 500.

Microsoft says that the majority of bugs causing BSODs and app crashes have already been fixed, but at the same time, the company has also tried to implement new options based on user feedback, such as options to configure which folder is the default when opening File Explorer.

New build coming next month

At this point, users can already download and install Windows 10 build 9901 from unofficial channels, but Microsoft recommends everyone to stay away from it because it contains bugs and performance issues that might affect the overall performance with the OS.

At the same time, Redmond has reminded us that a new build is coming soon, most likely next month, as the company will be holding a new Windows 10 event on January 21, when it’s expected to share new details on the consumer approach of its operating system.
