Microsoft compiles new build of Windows 10 TP

Some of the users who installed the leaked Windows 10 build 10056, which reached the web a few days ago, are now seeing another build in Windows Update, so they thought that Microsoft just released a new version of the technical preview for everyone.

Interestingly, Windows 10 Technical Preview build 10061 is indeed available via Windows Update, but unless you’re a Microsoft employee, it won’t download.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed on Twitter that “people who installed the leaked 10056 build will see 10061 offered, but unless they are MS employees, it won't install,” so there’s no chance to get it right now.

Surprisingly, however, the update only shows up on a limited number of PCs, so on our systems, for example, there’s no update available when launching build 10056.

Build 10056 PCs could be allowed to update

There’s no doubt that many have already installed Windows 10 Technical Preview build 10056 that got leaked last week, so the big question right now is whether the company will allow users to update to a new version when it becomes available or they have to go back to the latest official release.

Gabe Aul has said in a tweet that Microsoft is still considering an option that would allow those who installed the leak to update, but this might be unavailable because of technical limitations.

“No promises, but probably will be able. We don't validate upgrades from unsupported builds, so always a risk of issues,” Aul points out.

Right now, there are no details as to when the new build could be released, but it’s believed that Microsoft is now finalizing work on a fresh version, and the release could take place later this month. The company has already promised to share new builds at a faster cadence, so late April would be a good time for an update.
