The famous media player is still up for grabs for all users

The famous media player Winamp was scheduled to be discontinued on December 20, 2013, as AOL has decided to go on without the application it bought from Nullsoft in late '90s.

Even though the application was set to go dark approximately one week ago, Winamp is still up for grabs today, December 27, which is an indication that something is obviously happening behind the closed doors.

According to some previous reports, AOL is currently involved in some advanced talks with a potential buyer, which means that the media player might after all be saved and live on despite the parent company's plans to get rid of it.

What's more, some people familiar with the matter hinted that Redmond tech giant Microsoft itself could be interested in taking over Winamp, even though it's hard to understand how exactly such an app would fit in its app portfolio.

Microsoft already has Windows Media Player as the default music and video player for users of its operating system and continues to invest millions of dollars in Xbox Music, an app available on multiple platforms, including Windows 8.
