Winamp has just received the latest update before the official retirement date scheduled to take place in mid-December.

Version 5.66 build 3507 comes to improve many of the features available in the app, including the reset button to clear history in the Open/Add URL dialog, and the speed of the shutdown process.

At the same time, the application has received a new option to disable the mouse wheel when trying to adjust the volume and turn off all online features when no Internet connection is enabled in the settings panel.

What’s more, the developing team has increased notification area tooltips to 128 characters, while new options come to enhance playback resuming for both podcasts and audio files stored locally.

Overall, this is a very helpful update, so download Winamp 5 Full 5.66 build 3507 right now to get all these improvements right now.

As I’ve told you not a long time ago, AOL has decided to completely discontinue Winamp on December 20, advising users to download and update their media players while they still can.

“Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years,” a notification posted on the official Winamp.com website reads.

While AOL hasn’t provided any reason for the decision to kill Winamp, it’s believed that the dropping market share of the application is at fault for this, mostly because freeware media players have grown a lot in popularity lately.

Winamp was acquired by AOL in 1999 for $80 million (59.4 million) in stock and was at that time the number one audio player on the market.
