The first beta for WinRAR 5.0 popped out yesterday. Today, the developer rolled out the second beta, bringing to the table an important fix for a glitch caused by the previous release.

It appears that in the case of adding an incompressible file to non-solid RAR packages, WinRAR 5.0 beta 1 would create a damaged file by duplicating the first megabyte in the archive.

Solid archives are RAR compressions processed by treating all the items in the package as a continuous data stream.

It is specific to RAR archiving format only; it is not available for ZIP format because it stores separate compressed files.

One advantage for using this method is that the program can achieve better compression, especially in the case of numerous smaller files.

The developer addressed a second issue, which caused an archive to be stored in the wrong folder occasionally, if the process was initiated from Explorer’s context menu.
