24-hour open window to upgrade WinPatrol with less than $1

UPDATE: The offer has been extended to 48 hours (until January 30, 12:01 AM EST) due to some server issues.

Although the 99 cents per song sales model has worked brilliantly in the music industry, bringing huge profits to both artists and labels, it has never been applied in the software industry. Software developers are generally reluctant when it comes to putting a low price on what, sometimes, may be the result of several years’ work.

And yet there is someone “crazy” enough to apply this model to an acclaimed piece of software that usually sells for $29.95. WinPatrol has been familiar with success from the beginning of its life, more than 12 years ago. It is a common presence on any computer savvy’s system, as it represents an important layer of protection. It is designed to monitor the activity of any program on the computer and alert the user in case of intrusion.

The unusual offer is actually a limited time experiment planned by the developer out of curiosity, just to see if it would be worth the risk. The result is a 24-hour open window (starting January 29th at 12:01 AM EST) to get the acclaimed WinPatrol PLUS for just 99 cents. No catch and no strings attached, except for the fact that you need to have the free edition of the program installed and to upgrade it. If you are an active user not familiar with WinPatrol, trying the freebie will actually benefit your system.

There are some limitations, though: sales are limited to one per customer and the license is valid for a single computer. Comparing the lifetime license you get for 99 cents and the benefits of the paid edition, it is safe to say that you’re literally dealing with an offer you can’t refuse.

WinPatrol comes complete with startup, task and service managers that let you keep an eye on running processes. Moreover, you can organize the startup elements to launch with a certain delay in order to improve on boot times and allow critical apps to start their work ahead of others.

Bottom line is that the free version of WinPatrol is already a good way to stay updated with the latest intrusions on your system, but upgrading to PLUS grants you access to its knowledgebase, provides real-time infiltration detection, and it can automatically respond and hide specific alerts. So, upgrading for less than a dollar for a lifetime license when the regular price is set to $29.95 is definitely not a bad deal.
