Wilkes students will from now on be able to fully benefit from the advanced technologies offered by Mac hardware and the Mac OS X operating system.
Wilkes University has recently become one of the first US universities to switch from Windows-equipped PCs to Intel Mac computers.

The University plans to completely switch to Macs during the next three years. They intend to provide both students and the teaching staff with access to the Mac OS X and specific Mac applications such iLife and the Apple suite of digital lifestyle application. The university campus has a network of about 1,700 machines that will be replaced with Macs in the following three years.

The switch does not, however, deprive the Wilkes students of Windows experience. The Macs will run both Mac OS X and Windows, to give students the best of everything. "Macs are constructed with superior technology and hardware and their ability to run Windows means we still have access to any Windows programs," says Scott Byers, vice president for finance and general counsel at Wilkes. He thinks the switch will enable the university to create a virus-free network.

The Wilkes University has already equipped almost all labs with Macs, and the rest of the campus network will be renewed step by step. The investment is said to cost the university $1.4 million.

"Experience with the most advanced computers available today will provide our students with an edge when they enter today's job market with increasingly demanding technological expertise," says Tim Gilmour, president at Wilkes University. The changes that have begun to take place are set to provide the students with high-quality education and will "ensure they graduate with 21st Century skills".

Wilkes University is a private, non-denominational U.S. university located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It was established as an independent institution in 1940 and was granted university status in 1990.
