Wikimedia Foundation, the organization behind Wikipedia, hasn't ventured that far out from its core product, Wikipedia of course. There's the Wikimedia Commons and the Wiktionary, but Wikipedia still takes the center stage.

That's probably not going to change any time soon, but the group is looking at other places where it can make a difference, like travel.

Dubbed Wikivoyage, the site has been live for the past few months, in beta form. But it seems that it's close to ready and may be launched next week.

The site aims to provide useful and up-to-date information about places around the world. It's designed to help travelers on the go, looking for places to stay and things to see, those planning a trip or even those with no internet connection.

It's not supposed to be an advertising site and the advice is geared towards practical info rather than review places to stay and so on.

While this version of the site is new, Wikivoyage has been around since 2006. The new site is also based on Wikitravel, a site not affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation going back to 2003.
