Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia project written and edited by thousands of volunteers. The effort is built around the Wiki technology, Web pages designed to let all interested users edit and contribute to projects on a common interface. The project was launched in January of 2001.

Founder of the Wikipedia project, Jimmy Wales said yesterday the encyclopedia he helped build could soon be available in print for readers in the developing world. He also said there is a real possibility having the encyclopedia content burned to CDs and DVDs and have them sent to countries in Africa, where there's no Internet access, but people still need to be informed. The great amount of information the Wikipedia encyclopedia holds could really make a difference in the teaching process in such underdeveloped countries.

So far, issues like funding, distribution and most appropriate and interesting topics haven't been discussed but at best, the first printed version of Wikipedia (which anyone of you could have contributed to) could be ready in mid-2006, according to Jimmy Wales.
