And the words aren't coming from either of the competitive companies

Today's headlines are all bad for Nintendo. First I heard someone (other than myself) saying that one of its games was simple, then there was that parody video of Wii Fit, then this. According to Aussie-nintendo.com, Dave Perry (well known for Earthworm Jim) told Disposable Media that gamers generally fall for "beautiful looking games." Thus, he claims that if developers bring something truly original to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, Wii gamers will simply forget about Nintendo's motion-sensitive-using gaming system.

"The graphical power of the 360 and PS3 are essential to them attracting the Wii's user base," argued Perry. "The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games. When a game comes out - a game like a Halo or something, something they haven't seen before - they'll drop everything and they'll drop their Wii controllers when it does," he said.

However, he doesn't hesitate to admit that the PlayStation 3 "hasn't succeeded yet in what it can deliver," one of the reasons being the difficulties developers generally encounter when developing something for it. He is confident of the machine's success in the long run, though: "I don't think we've seen a true PS3 title yet, but developers are getting better and it's only a matter of time before the PS3 starts achieving what it offers to consumers."

Dave Perry continued arguing that "what we see at the moment is companies adding more and more complexity to a game's input, which is the wrong direction games are going in." The model for the Wii interface is clearly working, Nintendo took buttons off their controller, and that didn't make it impossible to make games for it. There's like seventeen different buttons on a PlayStation 3 controller.

Perry concluded stating the following: "I think we'll always see more and more interesting approaches to interface, and I really don't think the Wii is the ultimate solution to that."
