Yesterday, after announcing better-than-expected financial results for the quarter that ended on June 30, publisher Activision Blizzard has announced that the Nintendo Wii home console was set to get a version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 this year.

And now the company has also confirmed that development work on the game will be handled by Treyarch, the company that has created last year's blockbuster Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Robert Bowling, who is the creative director working at Infinity Ward, has stated during a podcast with Activision Community Manager Dan Amrich that, “The great thing is Treyarch proved that you can have an awesome experience on the Wii with Call of Duty. They’ll actually be handling that for Modern Warfare 3.”

Infinity Ward has never created a game for the Wii while Treyarch has worked on the platform before, launching the ports of Black Ops, World at War as well as creating stand alone title Reflex.

It's not clear whether Activision Blizzard is launching a Wii version of its main franchise hoping that it will attract a sizable audience or just so that it established trust with Nintendo and paves the way for a launch of the series on the Wii U home console, which should be out at some point during 2012.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues the story from the second installment in the series and will see the player travel to major cities around the globe as the war between North America and Russia continues to rage.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft is set to be launched on November 8 worldwide but Activision Blizzard has not yet announced whether the Wii version will come on the same date or later in the year.
