Shigeru Miyamoto, the leading game developer at Nintendo, admits that the company has so far failed to create innovative gameplay mechanics linked to the second screen capabilities of the GamePad controller for the Wii U.

The veteran game maker tells GameInformer that, “really for Wii U where we look at the benefit of the gamepad screen, is we really look at it as sort of a requirement in terms of how we're handling menus and sub-screens within the games.”

Before the device was launched, Nintendo tried to promote the GamePad as a revolutionary controller, similar to the Remote and Nunchuk pair for the original Wii.

It’s unclear whether coming Wii U releases, like Pikmin 3 or the new Mario titles, will offer more gameplay possibilities linked to the GamePad.

The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 will also have second screen capabilities.
