The hardware team at Nintendo announces that it will use the Near Field Communications system of its Wii U home console in order to power microtransactions, using a system called Suica, which is very popular in Japan.

Satoru Iwata, the president of the company, is quoted by EGM as telling investors that “We are also exploring the possibility of using Wii U’s NFC functionality to provide a method for settling small payments in addition to creating new gameplay experiences.”

Nintendo will use the tech in order to increase the revenue it derives from digital content.

Iwata believes that it will be easier than ever for players to pay small amounts of money to the company, although he did not explain what titles will benefit from the new feature.

The Wii U disappointed in terms of sales during the past three months.
