The Wii U and the new PlayStation Vita are the big hardware announcements made at the E3 2011 trade event and despite the level of interest that surrounds the new Nintendo home console the bosses at rival hardware makers Sony believe there's no reason to rush to make announcements about the PlayStation 4.

Jack Tretton, who is the Chief Executive Officer and the president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, has said, “I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said 'Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.'”

He added, “What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it.”

The executive has also announced that the company will not be talking about a new PlayStation home console for some time, choosing instead to focus on delivering more content and more options for the third generation of the hardware.

The Sony leader believes that each of the big players in the hardware market now have a niche they dominate, with Nintendo taking over the casual and young audience, Microsoft aiming to be the best for shooter fans while Sony is trying to be the brand for the “masses”.

In the coming months the PlayStation 3 will be pushed forward by a wider adoption of the 3D standard and by the launch of such platform exclusives as Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3.

At the moment the PlayStation 3 is lagging behind both the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii in terms of sales in the United States but is believed to be performing better on European markets.
