During the New York event where it announced a November 18 launch date for the Wii U home console in North America, Nintendo has also unveiled a new service called Nintendo TVii, which will use the GamePad controller in order to allow the player to explore a range of content.

The application is only available to those who buy the Wii U in the United States and in Canada and will make the GamePad controller a tool that will allow them to find and then watch their favorite video content, coming from sources which range from a live television feed to video-on-demand or TiVo.

Regie Fils-Aime, who is the leader of Nintendo of America, has said that TVii has been under development for some time and that his company was waiting for the technology to come along that could make it a reality.

He stated, “Soon, what you watch, and how you watch, will come together on Wii U.”

Nintendo TVii will also have a social component and users will be able to browse the Mii avatars of their friends in order to see what they are watching and discover content that they themselves might be interested in.

The fact that the Wii U has two screens means that those who use TVii will be able to look at a movie on the big television screen while also watching a trailer on the GamePad or looking up information on an actor on IMDB.

The Wii U will also integrate both Twitter and Facebook in order to make the entire content watching experience more social.

Nintendo has been very interested in pushing the way the Wii U can use its touch screen-enabled controller and the TVii concept seems like a good way of making sure that there’s a reason to use the new console beyond simply playing games.
