Hardware maker Nintendo announces that it is launching the 4.0.2 firmware update for its Wii U home console, which is designed to improve the overall stability and user experience on the platform.

The official announcement from the support site states, "Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience."

Nintendo does not say which video games are affected by the changes introduced by the 4.0.2 firmware update but advises players to set aside enough time to complete the download in one session.

With the launches of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 the WIi U is facing tough competition during this holiday shopping season.

Sales of the device have been disappointing during the first six months of the year but the launch of some high profile games like the most recent Zelda might improve the situation before the end of 2013.
