NINTENDO

Wii Modded

- Or so says today's hottest game video on YouTube

By: Filip Truta, Games Editor

Today's hottest game video on YouTube can easily pass for "worst home-made-video ever" as the quality of the picture simply sucks and if you don't pay enough attention you probably won't understand a thing.

The video starts off with the "camera man" shooting the "wiinja" box where he got the chip with which he presumably modded Nintendo
Wii console, then the oldest TV set ever which, again, presumably displays the actual content of the burned discs. It looks pretty genuine, the Spanish guy shot every important part of the process but still left a lot of room for speculation as the image doesn't show a big space surrounding the TV set, which means he could have easily hidden a second Wii connected.

Of course it would have involved a tremendous amount of synchronization with one of his buddies hidden under the table and I personally don't see the reason for him going through so much trouble for this to be just a hoax.

There have been a lot of rumors and hoaxes about modding the Wii ever since it has been released but, this video seems to be a little bit more inspired. If it is true, and the Wii can be modded that’s not completely good news. Yes, you can save a lot of money by using burned CDs but developers too respond to piracy and they do that by releasing fewer games. So it's not a guaranteed winner, especially when the only clues we have are a video on YouTube and a couple of lousy pictures of the mod chip itself.

Engadged says that the chip apparently requires soldering to the Wii innards in order to function, but it purportedly allows for Wii and GameCube backups to be played back on the console.
