Rob Cousens talks about consoles and, especially, Nintendo Wiis

Codemasters' CEO Rod Cousens has talked about the possible introduction of a Nintendo Wii 2 console, as well as his doubts over the longevity of their latest gaming console, in an interview for GameDaily. He also made pertinent comments about the war between the consoles, as well as the dominance first party publishers have over the third-party ones.

The first thing Rod Cousens pointed before starting to predict the future was the fact that Nintendo takes about 60-70 percent of the market when it comes to its consoles, no matter what their name is. This leaves the third party developers to fight for a small percentage which, Cousens thinks, will result "in a sudden flood of software by third parties onto a platform that's currently seen as the Holy Grail". Probably Codemasters' next Wii game, Emergency Mayhem, needs a breath of fresh air?

Anyway, the most important thing for us is the fact that he predicts a Nintendo Wii 2 will have to hit the markets pretty soon if the company wants to keep their huge sales and dominance in the war between the consoles. And that would have do be done since the 60 year old "brain training" idea might dry up sooner rather than later.

"I could give you an argument that says there's going to be a 'Wii 2' pretty quickly because [Nintendo would need one] in order to sustain momentum over a 10-year period. And what type of software would it have then? Because right now it isn't driven by technological supremacy or power. I wonder if the idea of opening up a whole new audience to 60-year-olds looking to make sure their brain cells don't die off is a sustainable form of entertainment," Rod Cousens said.

And, no matter if the guy is criticizing the consoles, the games or whatever, I am sure that that idea of a brand new type of Wii to play at is something many people would adore, no matter if they are 10 or 60 years old. Of course, this kind of predictions always tend to be somewhat wrong.
