There is even disk burning software available for phones and tablets

Wireless support is being implemented in all sorts of devices it seems, even in designs with potential pitfalls, like the Logitec LDR-PS8WU2BKW optical disk drive.

Though it was originally an external DVD writer, the optical unit was merged with a router and turned into a network-attached storage device (NAS) that, rather than HDDs or SSDs, uses optical disks.

Smartphones, tablets and PCs can all access whatever data happens to exist on a DVD inserted into the newcomer, provided they possess Wi-Fi, of course.

Logitec even ships with store links to Apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play. It makes it easier to download the required file manager and disc burning software.

With the latter, even phones and slates will be able to order the DVD to store one or more files on a disk. The risk of the wireless network crashing or hanging is one of those potential pitfalls we have mentioned previously.

For the particularly nervous, a USB 2.0 cable can be used for data writing instead, although it mostly defeats the purpose of the router.

At any rate, the product is selling in Japan for 6,980 JPY (US $88.2 / 67.29 Euro) with a USB cable and AC adapter. A variant with a vehicle power adapter ships for 8,980 JPY (US $113.4 / 86.57 Euro).
