Why Stop at Just One?

- Is Apple worried about iPod sales?

By: Victor Mihailescu, Apple News Editor

Does anyone need more than just one iPod? Apple sure hopes so, judging by the new campaign that seems to have been launched in the Apple Stores. Could Apple be worrying about iPod sales and try to improve them somehow?

Although in recent months, iPod sales have been slipping, and investors and analysts are watching the cash cow slowly dwindle, this is a rather natural phenomenon. Devices such as the iPod have a relatively long lifetime, and advances in technology that mark significant improvements over previous generations are rare.

Even though iPod sales will naturally soften over time, Apple is still selling a lot of the devices, and will be beating their 8.53 million iPods it sold in the second quarter of last year by quite a wide margin. In fact, Apple is expected to sell 10 million to 11 million units.

Is Apple trying to boost sales by enticing customers to buy more than just one iPod? It could be, but then this is nothing uncommon seeing how the different iPods see different uses. The Shuffle has always been very popular with active people who want something small and durable when working out or cycling, something that Apple seems to be very aware of given the new design of the Shuffle. The bigger iPods are by far too big and more prone to scratching and accidental damage.

While the "Why stop at just one?" signs have popped up in the stores and have been photographed by sharp-eyed bloggers, Apple has not officially acknowledged the new marketing campaign, or responded to calls asking if it will spread to their Web site and other advertising. It could also be that Apple is trying to limit the slow in iPod sales caused by customers holding out for the much awaited iPhone instead of upgrading their portable music players.
