You won’t believe it until you see it, but a $0.99 / €0.89 alarm clock app is currently the most downloaded paid app on iTunes. People certainly aren’t that obsessed with their sleep patterns (although they probably shouldbe), so what’s going on?

According to Northcube AB, Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock is “An intelligent alarm clock that analyzes your sleep and wakes you in the lightest sleep phase – the natural way to wake up feeling rested and relaxed.”

Alarm clock apps are a dime a dozen, so why choose this one? Well, maybe it has something to do with the fact that it was featured on CNN, Wired, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, BBC, The New York Times, and other renowned publications. It’s the Flappy Bird effect.

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock is the top paid app in the United States, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, and Canada. The thing is, it actually seems to work wonders for the user.

Its Sleep Cycle feature analyzes your sleep and wakes you in your lightest sleep phase using one of 15 carefully-selected soothing alarm melodies, and has an intelligent sleep aid that detects when you fall asleep and automatically fades the sound.

Sleep notes let you see how drinking coffee, eating too much, or having a stressful day affect your sleep quality, and long-term graphs allow you to track your sleep quality over time and see which days of the week you sleep best.
