Today, the world knows why the world's favorite tabloid character died on February 9, 2007. The results of the toxicology tests and the autopsy report was made public by the Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper and the Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger, during a televised press conference and this is what they told the media and general public: there was no suicide, no homicide. Only a lethal combo of prescription drugs and a very bad blood infection caused by an infected needle that perforated an abscess.
Anna Nicole rose to fame for her out of the ordinary behavior every time there was a camera around her. Her greatest idol in life, the woman she always tried to emulate, was Marilyn Monroe and not few were those that suggested that their names will finally be remembered in the same sentence for dying in a similar manner. It's a sad think to say, come to think of it, but that doesn't make it less true.
While the investigation into Anna's death was underway, there was lots of speculation as to what might have made her sick and, ultimately, end her life at only 39. The fact that Anna was taking drugs was a mystery for no one, especially as her last televised appearances were not quite what one might call 'standard' - and this is why many believed that she either died of an overdose of illegal drugs or that someone (again, there were rumors about who that 'someone' might have been) killed her by keeping her constantly drugged up and unaware of her own situation.
Dr. Perper is now here to offer answers to all these questions: the case is closed because Anna was neither killed, nor did she commit suicide. The toxicology tests revealed that she was taking up to nine prescribed drugs at the time of her death (including Valium, Ativan, antihistamines, chloral hydrate, methadone, a growth and longevity hormone) but neither of them separately was strong enough to kill her. All these medicines combined proved fatal for the glamour model, since they led to unexpected reactions.
But there was also another thing that contributed to the early death of the model: a blood infection that ended in a fever. When Anna Nicole arrived in the US, she was running a 105 degree fever, after she had perforated an abscess in one of her buttocks with an infected needle. Anna was self-administering a growth hormone, which helped her stay fit and was probably not aware either of the fact that she had used an unsterilized needle or that this was the cause of the fever. She refused to go to the hospital and, instead, chose to break it down by taking ice baths and chloral hydrate (a medicine which is no longer used for this purpose).
Dr. Perper refused to reveal the identities of the doctors who supplied Anna with drugs, saying only that they were probably not aware that she was taking so many of them. He also announced that, since her death was neither a suicide nor a homicide, the case is closed. No one will be prosecuted for her untimely death. No one is responsible for it.
Perper's statement represents the final chapter of the long drama that was Anna Nicole Smith's life. All that remains now to be settled is who is the real father of her daughter, Dannielynn Hope, and who will eventually inherit. For that to end too, we will probably have to wait some more. But stay tuned here for further details in the paternity suit.
