Who Says Opera Is Secure?

- It isn't if you don't install the latest version

By: Bogdan Popa, Security and Search Engines Editor

I've heard people saying that Opera is one of the most secure browsers ever created, being safer to use than Firefox or Internet Explorer. In fact, every application is quite secure if you install the latest version or you apply the newest patches. And this is Opera's case too, because some security vulnerabilities have been discovered in some older releases that really require the
update to the latest version. SecurityFocus today wrote that all versions prior to 9.25 are affected by the vulnerabilities, so the newest edition of the application is almost a 'must have'.

"Opera Web Browser is prone to multiple security vulnerabilities, including remote code-execution, information-disclosure, and cross-domain scripting issues. Attackers can exploit these issues to execute remote code and obtain sensitive information in the context of the affected application. Attackers may be able to exploit some of the issues to carry out cross-domain scripting attacks", SecurityFocus wrote in the advisory.

At this time, there's no successful exploitation reported, but you should really update to the latest version of the application, just to be sure that nobody ever attempts to take advantage of the flaws.

Opera has always been one of the browsers that aimed to increase its number of users, by introducing more or less powerful features supposed to help the company reach its goal. However, the main two players of the market are still Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer, while Opera is still struggling to gain more audience. For instance, Opera recorded no less than 114,106 downloads here on Softpedia, while its super rival Firefox attracted 623,616.

If you want to download the latest version of the Opera Browser, the one that fixes all the mentioned vulnerabilities, you can take it straight from Softpedia using the following link.
