Howard Schmidt has decided to step down from the cyber security adviser position he has been occupying for almost two and a half years at the White House. He wants to dedicate his time to his family and to teaching IT security.

According to The Washington Post, Schmidt, who is now 62, took the job at the beginning of 2010 after previously working for Microsoft, the Air Force and even as a top cybersecurity officer during the George W. Bush administration.

Before he came to the White House, after President Obama was instated, the position remained vacant for quite some time because no one actually wanted to carry the responsibility.

The official’s retirement comes at a moment in which the US government is trying to set things straight in the cybersecurity sector.

After Schmidt retires, his place will be taken by Michael Daniel, currently the chief of the intelligence branch of the White House budget office.
