Mickey Rourke makes for a very convincing villain

Although Marvel and everybody else involved in the project tried for a very long while to keep the identity of the actor playing the villain in “Iron Man 2” a secret, it eventually emerged that the honor would go to none other than freshly returned to the spotlight Mickey Rourke. Anticipation to see him as Whiplash has been slowly building up and now, thanks to Marvel and Apple, fans get their first taste of what is coming their way, as AceShowbiz can confirm.

Rourke is a Russian convict with a bone to pick with Tony Stark. After he finds out that Stark is actually Iron Man, he sets out to build for himself a weapon as indestructible as Iron Man’s – and comes up with something even more dangerous, as fans will find out in May next year, when the film hits theaters. The poster should be enough, however, to offer plenty of hints on the dangers that Iron Man will have to face in the second installment in the franchise.

“Paramount Pictures has released a new poster for ‘Iron Man 2.’ Debuted by Apple, the official one-sheet features the Iron Man’s nemesis, Whiplash, who is portrayed by Mickey Rourke. Though the character has been introduced in previously released still, he is exposed in a scarier look in this new image. Shortly after releasing out the poster, the studio also has given out a picture of what is called ‘an “Iron Man 2” clue.’ An exclusive courtesy of Superhero Hype, this photo features a newspaper article which mentions Tony Stark and his alter ego Iron Man,” AceShowbiz writes.

Two other posters that had hit the Internet only days before show Tony Stark and alter-ego Iron Man. Now that the world got a first look at Whiplash too, hopes are high that Marvel will focus next on the women in the movies, namely Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Stark’s assistant and love interest Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow). The first trailer for the film will arrive in theaters tied to Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” which also stars Robert Downey Jr.

“IGN has confirmed that the first trailer for the film will come out along with the Christmas release of ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and debut online at Apple. However, previously, there was rumor that New Zealand will get to see the trailer a week earlier than the US,” AceShowbiz also states. As the posters also announce, “Iron Man 2” is scheduled for release on May 7, 2010. Keep an eye on this space for more details on it.
