Two days to go until Apple finally confirms its real plans with the Mac platform. Pretty much everyone is convinced that a certain Mac OS X Lion will be unveiled at the company’s forthcoming Town Hall event, while new Macs are also likely to emerge.

The invitations sent out by Apple to select members of the media indicate that the event will focus on the Mac. A lion peering out from behind the company’s iconic logo can also be seen.

Given that for the past decade or so Apple has been naming all major versions of Mac OS X after big cats (Panther, Tiger, Leopard etc.), naming the latest iteration after the king of the jungle indicates we’re on the verge of witnessing some major breakthroughs in software development.

It's either that or Apple is closing Mac OS X development, and moving onto developing a Minority Report-style solution. Either way, they're running out of cats.

Whether or not we’re accurate in this prediction, we’re just as curious as you are as to what Apple has in store for the next major update to Mac OS X.

New Macs should also go well with the new OS. Almost every analyst and tech-blogger voicing on the matter believes both hardware and software unveilings are to take place on October 20.

Now that you know our thoughts on the matter, we encourage our readers to express theirs by answering these questions

(You can choose which one(s) to answer, or provide your own hypothesis as to what Mac OS X 10.7 will be all about).

1. Do you think Mac OS X 10.7 will boast iChat + FaceTime integration?

2. Do you think the Dashboard will be replaced by an iOS-based platform?

3. Will Lion have a focus on Cloud computing, as the AppleTV has on streaming content?

4. Will it have an updated Finder, a new GUI altogether, new Apple-developed applications?

5. Will OS X Lion have NTFS support?

6. Do you think Apple plans an App Store for Mac apps that’s similar to the iTunes App Store for iOS devices?

I think everything is possible except number 2, 5, and 6. These do not seem realistic of Apple to do, especially the NTFS one.

1.
A FaceTime integration in iChat is more than self-evident. Apple want to make it a standard in the industry, plus it would give one more reason for users to embrace iChat while many still use Adium, Live Messenger and aMSN.

2.
Nearly all the dashboard apps can be found on the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, and in a better way. Why not replace them and build a bridge to iOS. That's a great idea.

3.
The question has been answered already with the Apple TV, iDisk, and MobileMe, could computing is the future.

4.
The latest refinements in iTunes (always a step ahead in terms of GUI), combined with the fact Aqua is getting a bit old, could lead to a new GUI. As for the Finder, I think we could be surprised, there was no major refinement with Snow Leopard.

5.
Why not.

6.
That is very uncertain, the first purpose of the App Store is to make sure the apps are not battery drainers, porn free and of quality, it is a necessity on small devices, aimed to professionals and teenagers, but this kind of control is absolutely useless on a Mac, a system far more open. Plus it would monopolize much effort from the company working mass, while many apps already do the same job quite well (Bodega) not to mention online mac apps listings.

I believe Apple should make a Mac App store and replace dashboard with ios apps because this could possibly help the Mac OSX operating system take a way from windows. 300,000 apps is definitely a selling point to just upgrade to this new operating system, if you already have a mac.

'Return to the MAC' they say....

I believe the iChat Facetime integration is highly likely and closely followed by a Windows version. They have spent considerable time and money promoting FaceTime and promised at launch that we could use it with 10 of millions of devices within 12 months. This would also break it out of the iDevice to iDevice only restriction but still keeping it iDevice to terminal use.
I cannot see a Mac App Store appearing as this gives the impression of locking software to a single store. Cloud computing is a big favourite (UK spelling) of mine and I hope it will appear as a MobileMe package linked to iDisk.
Finally, I would love for Steve's "One last thing..." to be that Lion 10.7 or even OS X 11 (as we are approaching 2011), be released this Friday. It has appeared in server logs for well over a year and Snow Leopard was merely a refining of Leopard. I doubt it will appear this year however but we can all hope.
