As a smartphone owner you probably noticed this countless times – while being engaged in a prolonged conversation over the phone, your device tends to overheat in your hand, causing you to be less comfortable while keeping the handset next to your ear.

If you ever got curious which smartphone available on the market heats up the least, thermal imaging technology is here to solve the riddle for you.

Gizmo China put three flagship smartphones coming out of China to the test and the results are in. The Meizu MX4 Pro, Huawei Honor 6 Plus and Xiaomi’s super-popular Mi4 were compared against each other in the heating tests.

What’s very interesting is that the three devices run on completely different silicone setups, which are representatives for some of the world’s top chipset makers.

The three phones are pretty diverse, silicone-wise

The Meizu MX4 Pro is based on a Samsung octa-core Exynos 5430 chip clocked at 2.0GHz, while the Huawei dual-camera phone uses an octa-core Kirin 925 model, clocked at 1.8GHz from its own garden. Last but not least, Xiaomi makes use of a Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz.

The smartphones were placed in several scenarios, designed to put a strain on their processing power. In the first, a high-intensity game, Riptide GP2 was loaded on board.

The Honor 6 Plus managed to stay the coolest, having a temperature of maximum 37.6 degrees Celsius / 99.68 degrees Fahrenheit measured at the bottom of the device.

Meizu MX4 Pro came second with a 42.7 degrees Celsius / 108.86 degrees Fahrenheit, while the Xiaomi Mi4 scored the worse, with an uncomfortable 44.8 degrees Celsius / 112.64 degrees Fahrenheit registered.

Temperature was measured again at the back cover side of the device, but things remained unchanged, with the Honor 6 Plus being the coolest while the Xiaomi Mi4 heated up quite a lot.

In another test, the handsets were measured after an intense video recording session of half an hour. Again, the Huawei Honor 6 Plus performed admirably with 38.4 degrees Celsius / 101.12 degrees Fahrenheit at the bottom of the device, but the runner-up in this case was the Mi4 registering a pretty high 44.5 degrees Celsius / 112.1 degrees Fahrenheit.

The MX4 Pro ran very hot while shooting video reaching a temperature level of 46.8 degrees Celsius / 116.24 degrees Fahrenheit.
