Greenpeace has announced that the 28 activists and the journalists detained by authorities in Russia following a protest against oil company Gazprom are now in St. Petersburg.

The activists were moved from Murmansk to this city by train. Apparently, they spent their entire journey locked away in a prison wagon.

Once in St. Petersburg, the activists were loaded into buses and transported to a detention center. For the time being, it is unclear where this detention center is located, and whether the detainees will from now on benefit from better living conditions.

“It is not yet certain which SIZO (detention centre) in St Petersburg they are being taken to or whether the new facility will represent an improvement on conditions compared with their detention in Murmansk,” Greenpeace writes on its official website.

“The 28 Greenpeace International activists and two freelance journalists may also be spread out over different locations across St Petersburg.”

Lawyers in charge of defending them against the hooliganism charges filed by Russian authorities have also arrived in St. Petersburg, and are currently trying to obtain more information.
