When Night Comes, We Die

Well, this is pretty much what you should expect from '30 Days of Night'. Great!

If you aren't sick yet of vampire and/or slasher movies, then this is something you should totally see. '30 Days of Night' brings nothing new to a genre that is already saturated with Draculas and potential Draculas - therefore its main attraction is not to be sought there. Sure, it's not as groundbreaking as '28 Days Later' was, a movie that had the guts to explore the other side of a classic zombie story, but, man, its effects and all that useless gore is sure meant to keep you on your seat.

With a cast pretty remarkable for a vampire movie, which includes Josh Hartnett (whom I like as an actor for no particular reason), Melissa George (whom I like because of the way she speaks - as if she's always with her mouth full) and Danny Huston (to whom I'm completely indifferent), '30 Days of Night' is also one of those 'lucky' projects to have been blessed by the touch of a master of cinematography: director Sam Raimi, who acts as producer. But, again, this is not what will certainly draw you to it, but rather the abundance of blood and the extremely violent images that continue throughout the film.

I guess that kinda says it all - '30 Days of Night' is not a concept movie, relying instead almost completely on its shock value, so that means that only fans of such kinds of projects will be able to duly enjoy it. And, in order to understand better what the big deal is all about, here are a few bits and pieces about the plot: set in a small town in Alaska, '30 Days' revolves around the story of the sheriff and his wife who, when night comes (which, duh, lasts for 30 days), see themselves confronted with the attack of a hoard of vampires. They must get as many people to join them and basically try to survive for an entire month in the total darkness that brought the vampires.

It's not a complicated story, therefore, don't expect it to be a very intellectually stimulating movie. But what will be interesting in it is that of which we only get hints in the red band trailer that Apple just released online. Usually, movies are given green band trailers but, every once in a while, the MPAA comes across a clip that might be too violent or too explicit for the audience and then they red-band it. This is the same as with the NC-17 movies - namely, death. Because said trailer is red-banded, it can't be shown in theaters unless before an R-rated or NC-17 movie but, in most cases, the theaters simply refuse to play it at all.

However, if you're of legal age, you can check it out HERE and you'll see why the MPAA is so protective. It's bloody, it's violent but, most important, it's all of that without an apparent reason! Yes, I like it. Then again, I also liked Britney Spears' 'Crossroads' so what do I know? But if you're a fan of the genre, you should totally check it out - '30 Days of Night' is scheduled for release on the 19th of October 2007.
