Romanticism should know no age or gender limitations, but there are times when it’s probably simply best to think things through before acting. A Chinese woman was left red-faced when her boyfriend publicly turned down her marriage proposal.

It’s not uncommon for women to propose to men. In fact, there’s even such a thing as a “mangagement,” and engagement ring for men, and the trend of offering them has been steadily gaining in popularity in recent years.

One Chinese woman probably thought she should take the initiative in her relationship, so she set out to make a very romantic – and public – marriage proposal to her boyfriend, Metro informs.

“After sending her boyfriend a message to come and meet her, the woman in question climbed on to the top of her car holding a bunch of roses,” the publication says.

It all went down at Wuhan University, during a “cherry blossom appreciation festival.”

“On the windscreen two boards displayed the words ‘Marry Me.’ However, when her boyfriend arrived his reply surprised the large crowd that had gathered – because he turned her down,” Metro reports.

He didn’t actually turn her down, though, the same media outlet further details. The boyfriend said he wouldn’t marry her now, but he did not rule out the possibility of doing so in the future.

Still, that doesn’t change the fact that the woman had to take a no (be it partial or not) in front of a crowd, which must have surely stung.

“It should be my job to make the proposal,” her boyfriend told her, getting down on one knee to console her.

“However, I now have nothing and I can’t give you a good life. If you can wait for me for three years, when I should have bought my house and car, I will propose to you,” the man added.

No word yet whether the woman agreed to take a raincheck on her marriage plans.
