The hugely popular cross-platform instant-messaging tool WhatsApp is now a free download for iPhone customers. Previously available for $0.99 / €0.89 in the iTunes App Store, WhatsApp iOS remains ad-free, despite its new $0 price tag.

Whether it’s the holiday spirit that got to WhatsApp Inc., the company is now offering its handsome communications tool completely free of charge for iOS customers.

The software has been a paid privilege for iPhone users until now, but now both Apple and Google (Android) customers are on par pricing-wise.

WhatsApp does text messaging, file sharing (pictures, audio, and video messages) without the need for in-app purchases.

All you get charged for is the Internet access, and only when you’re on cellular data. Using WhatsApp on Wi-Fi means $0 spent on chatting and file sharing.

And now the app itself is free of charge for anyone who hasn’t downloaded it yet. There must be at least eight people out there jumping with joy right now.

A few things to note before handing you the download link. On iOS, WhatsApp is compatible only with the iPhone because it’s a telephony application that uses your phone number to let other people reach you. In other words, iPad and iPod touch devices are out.

It requires iOS 4.3 or later and has been recently optimized for the iPhone 5. It works with pretty much all carriers and networks but some carrier limitations may apply in certain territories.

Customers who are on unsupported wireless carriers are encouraged to double-check the FAQ for up to date information on WhatsApp coverage.

Supported languages include English, Arabic, Bokmål, Norwegian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
