Windows Phone users received a new version of WhatsApp yesterday, and since no change log was provided, most people thought that this was all about bug fixes and code optimizations.

And yet, it seems like there is indeed a change in this new version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone, which aligns the design of notifications with the one included in Windows 10 for phones.

Starting with version, 2.11.670, WhatsApp displays notifications on two different rows, thus giving a bit more space to the actual text message. In previous versions, both the name of the sender and the message itself were displayed on the same line, so there was less room for text.

Thanks to this change, users can now read more straight from the notification center, without the need to open WhatsApp, so it's not just an improvement in terms of looks but also of usability.

More features likely to come soon

As WindowsCentral notes, this first tweak could actually be the first in a long series of improvements that WhatsApp (and possibly other apps) could get thanks to Windows 10.

As you have most likely heard by now, in Windows 10 notifications will be actionable, so you'll be able to reply to text messages and emails without opening the actual apps. This should make Windows 10 for phones easier to use, especially when trying to reply to a short text, and everything will be possible straight from the Start screen.

WhatsApp might prepare for a similar change, and maybe in Windows 10 we'll be able to reply to the messages we receive using a quick reply feature, as is the case with the built-in messaging app.

Microsoft has provided just a small preview for now to see how actionable notifications actually work, but the company said that lots of features would change before the operating system gets the green light, so expect everything to work faster and new options to be implemented by the time this happens.
