A few things to check before going in for a repair

There are times when nothing works as it should and your iPod is no exception. You may want to contradict me but all iPods will, eventually, experience one or more of the issues presented in this article. Your iPod may not power on at all, it may display the battery logo and refuse to respond to any of your commands, or, the worst scenario, it may even stop responding while playing music.

Although in most of these situations whatever you try does not work, if you really know what you’re doing you can quickly get your device up and running in no time. Depending on your iPod’s symptoms, you will sometimes have to follow a specific procedure to make sure that your device will come back to life unharmed and with all your content safe and sound.

As described by Apple in a couple of support articles, these are the measures you will have to take for resurrecting your not responding device.

Check if the iPod’s battery is charged

If a low battery screen appears for about 3 seconds when you try to turn it on, your iPod does not turn on because it has an empty battery. Connect the device to the Apple iPod Power Adapter and plug it into an electrical outlet or connect your iPod to your computer's high-powered USB port or the built-in 6-pin FireWire.

When connecting your fully discharged iPod to the USB port, be patient and wait up to 30 minutes for your device to have enough power to be able to turn on and be recognized by the computer and iTunes.

Check if the Hold switch is off

1. Check your iPod’s Hold switch to see if it is on (look for it on the bottom or the top of device – when on you will see an orange patch). 2. If on, turn the switch off by sliding it until you cannot see the orange. 3. Now press any button to turn your iPod back on.

Reset your iPod

If your iPod still refuses to turn on or it appears to be "frozen" you may have to reset it (go HERE to see how to do it). Note: After resetting your iPod, all your files will be automatically saved but some of your customized settings may be lost in the process.

Drain your iPod’s battery

If, after a reset, your iPod will still not turn, you will have to completely drain its battery by following these steps: 1. Disconnect the device from all power sources and leave it like that for 24 hours. 2. Reconnect the iPod to your computer or the Apple iPod Power Adapter and reset it (go HERE to see how to do it)..

Update your iPod's software

If your iPod will turn on after the reset, use the latest version of iTunes to update your device’s software (go HERE to see how to do that on a Mac or Windows based computer).   Additional tips

If you have tried the solutions above and iPod still won't turn on, check the following:

- Check if your iPod is the only device in your FireWire or USB ports. Make sure you disconnect everything else but your iPod, the mouse, and the keyboard, and then see if it will turn on. - Connect the iPod to a different computer to see if that works. Note: When using a laptop or notebook make sure it is plugged in to a power source and that it does not enter standby, sleep, or hibernation or your iPod will not charge properly. - Connect your iPod using the FireWire or USB cable that came with your device, and check if the cable is in good condition.

If all these procedures failed to help you turn on your iPod you may have to get it repaired. You can check Apple’s iPod Service Website and arrange for a repair.
