Apple doesn’t tell the whole story of OS X Server 3.0.2 in the brief changelog listed on the Mac App Store, according to a newly discovered Support document, which describes the changes in this update on a broader scale.

The Mac App Store page says OS X Server fixes LT2P VPN issues, various login and migration problems, and an issue using Xcode services with Git repositories.

The same set of release notes also say that Server 3.0.2 includes improvements for sending push notifications to MDM devices and that the software now requires OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks.

Yet KB article HT6079, titled “About the OS X Server v3.0.2 Update,” tells a whole different story about Apple’s latest developments on the server side of its desktop operating system.

The document first outlines that, “In order to allow L2TP connections to the VPN service you must also install the VPN Update for OS X Server.”

Customers are told to make sure OS X Mavericks v10.9.1 is installed first, then to proceed to install the Server v3.0.2 update and VPN Update for OS X Server.

Apple then reveals the full set of changes included in OS X Server 3.0.2 which, according to the KB article, “improves the general stability of OS X Server and delivers [...] specific improvements.” Those improvements are listed below.

Upgrade and migration

• Improves reliability of initial Server launch after upgrade or migration. • Software Update service will now serve updates to Mavericks clients automatically after upgrade or migration. • Fixes an issue that could prevent starting the DNS service after upgrade or migration.

Profile Manager

• Improves sending push notifications to managed devices. • Addresses an issue that could prevent some network users from receiving managed settings on OS X devices. • Improves reliability of enrollment for Active Directory users. • Fixes importing .csv files for placeholders. • Improves picking apps with non-Roman characters in their names.

Xcode Service

• Improves connecting to a remote Git repository via ssh.

Existing users can download OS X Server 3.0.2 for free from the Mac App Store, while newcomers will shell out $19.99 / €17.99 for a single user license.

Editor’s note Remember that it’s necessary to have OS X Mavericks version 10.9.1 installed prior to downloading Server 3.0.2, so you’d better hit that Software Update button before you do anything else.
