The shock produced by AMD's decision to sue its rival, Intel, is so great and the consequences are so important that it's hard to say whether the allegations are true or not.
Let's suppose for a few minutes that what AMD says is true, and Intel has indeed bribed, made promises, and employed any dirty trick to burry the competition.
Whether Intel employed these practices or not, it remains to
be proven, but the most severe effect of this action is the tarnished image of the IT industry. Even if only 10% of AMD's allegations prove to be true, then it means that we are dealing with an industry where corruption is a common thing.
I don't think the hardware industry has ever witnessed such a scandal that involved so many renowned companies. Truth is that after all no one knows who the guilty party is: Intel for trying and succeeding to carry out its plans or the ones that went along with these practices?
Has Intel offered better prices, has it threaten to stop or delay shipments, has it offered subsidies? Perhaps it has. But somebody accepted all these! Was everybody unaware of what was happening? Or did they prefer to keep their mouths shut and go along with it?
Honesty? Fair competition? Be reasonable, what about profit? By suing Intel, AMD casts a shadow of doubt over the entire industry.
And you cannot help but wonder, if this how things go in the hardware industry, what's it like in other domains of the IT world?
