Google didn’t announce anything mind-blowing

Google’s much anticipated I/O 2015 keynote came and went, and during it we got to hear the tech giant talk about a variety of topics, including Android M, Android Pay, the new Photos app, Android Wear’s improved functionalities, the evolution of Google Now, and so on.

But for some, the keynote proved to be quite disappointing. After all, we were expecting so much more to be unveiled during the event. And here’s a list of all the things we would have liked to have Google talk about yesterday.

The name of Android M

OK, so Android M was launched, but Google failed to provide the actual name of the update. We do know that the search giant has been testing the new build as “Macadamia Nut Cookie” but this naming scheme doesn’t seem likely.

Users have been eager to assume that Android M will actually be released as Milkshake, but that’s just wishful thinking at this point. And with the final version of the build probably coming sometime around this fall, Google has plenty of time to decide upon the name, while keeping us on our toes, guessing.

Two Nexus smartphones? How about none whatsoever?

Prior to the event, the rumor mill had been hot on its toes saying that, for the first time ever, Google was going to release not one new Nexus smartphone, but two.

It turns out that Google trolled everyone and launched nothing at all. So if you were curious about the purported Huawei and LG Nexus phones, though luck. You’ll have to hold on to your Nexus 6 for a little bit longer.

No Nexus tablets, either

Since word on the street had it that Google would release two Nexus smartphones, the sensible thing was to assume that no Nexus tablets would be coming this year.

Well, the bad news is that Google chose to put the expansion of its Nexus lineup on hold for good. So again, go grab your Nexus 9 tablet because you’re not getting anything else for a while.

Project Tango 2

With a day before the kickstart of Google I/O 2015, the tech behemoth made Project Tango available for purchase in the Google Play Store, invite-free.

So we speculated that Google might be looking to introduce a Project Tango 2 during the event, especially since no Nexus tablet appeared to be in the pipeline. But we were wrong to assume that.

Project Ara

Google’s modular smartphone project is one of the most interesting the company has had to offer in recent times.

Phone maker Yezz actually set up a Project Ara prototype and hopes to start selling Ara endoskeletons later this year. But Google didn’t offer any updates on the initiative, which is quite disappointing.

No new Android Wear smartwatches

Smartwatches are stagnating. Last year, every self-respecting tech manufacturers was rushing to launch a smartwatch, so we saw the rectangular types, the curved display types, and the round ones make an appearance.

But ever since, the smartwatch hype has died down. Sure, Android Wear continues to get updates and support for new apps. Still, the absence of any flashy new models points to the fact that this particular niche is slowly fading into oblivion.

Google Glass 2

Google’s most controversial project to date has been rumored to be slated for a revamp. Still, it appears the tech giant isn’t so advanced with the project, so at I/O 2015, it had no news to share related to the intelligent eyewear piece that used to freak out every onlooker on the street.
