What Do People Search For?

Most popular keywords entered on Google

Because a search engine is so popular and used, I was really curious to know what people search for when they use a search engine. So, I started searching the internet, using, of course, a search engine, and found Google Trends.

"With Google Trends, you can compare the world's interest in your favorite topics. Enter up to five topics and see how often they've been searched for on Google over time. Google Trends also displays how frequently your topics
have appeared in Google News stories, and which geographic regions have searched for them most often," Google says.

"Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results -- our search-volume graph -- plotted on a linear scale.

Located just beneath our search-volume graph is our news-reference-volume graph. This graph shows you the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories. When Google Trends detects a spike in the volume of news stories for a particular term, it labels the graph and displays the headline of an automatically selected Google News story written near the time of that spike. Currently, only English-language headlines are displayed, but we hope to support non-English headlines in the future," the company added.

For instance, I typed "software" and pressed search. The service displayed the top 10 cities that are looking for "software", the first 5 belonging to India.

Google Trends also allows comparing two keywords and viewing graphics with the cities, regions and languages that were searching for them. For example, comparing Beckham and Ronaldinho, we can see that Senegal searched more for Barcelona's star than for Madrid's player.
