Windows XP desktop gets tweaked with the help of third-party apps

Windows XP is no longer a supported operating system and users that are still running it are basically getting spammed with recommendations to upgrade to a newer platform as soon as possible. Basically, everyone is claiming that staying on Windows XP is a very risky decision because cybercriminals could easily exploit a computer running it if they found an unpatched vulnerability.

We recently came across an interesting suggestion that instantly seemed very appealing to those running the unsupported operating system: Windows XP Second Edition.

Basically, Windows XP Second Edition could be a mix of the traditional XP as we know it and Windows 8, featuring both classic and modern elements, but retaining the familiar look of the platform.

With this in mind, we’ve recently came across the photo that you can see above, which is a traditional Windows XP desktop modified with several third-party apps to look a bit more appealing.

A desktop clock and date that seems to get in line with Windows 8’s modern design style very well, a Google search box, as well as system information and battery details gadgets are all there to help you get things done on Windows XP.

The creator has moved the taskbar at the top of the screen, which might be a bit counter-productive for those who got used to the traditional Windows layout, but you could always move it back with just a few clicks. The full list of third-party apps used to tweak the desktop is available here.

Getting back to Windows XP Second Edition, such a design could easily appeal to many more users, although we admit that some might actually like the classic appearance even more. It’s all just a matter of choice, but there’s no doubt that many users out there wish Windows XP wasn’t dead.

Many users have already told us that Windows XP Second Edition would basically be a godsend, but here’s one of the comments that perfectly emphasizes the need for such an operating system. It belongs to our reader RadCazz.

“I still use XP because I have a bunch of older programs that will only run on it - despite trying the compatibility mode in Windows 7 - which failed to work. I love XP's interface and ability to go right to the desktop and access my programs that way. I'm comfortable with the good ol' Start button. Also, the ability to change the desktop background and have some neat pictures greet me when I boot up is a plus. I don't care for Windows 8.1's interface. I find the learning curve too steep. I've been using Windows since 3.1 version and would purchase Second Edition without pause.”
