What Future Holds for G80 Series

8800 video cards have only reached the stores for a day or so and it is already mass hysteria among the passionate.
Maybe that's good for those who have the money to buy such an expensive product. What about the rest of us then?

If you're hopping that G80 cards will be more affordable in the next months you'd better think again. G80 will eventually get cheaper when G90 series will be launched. And that does not solve the problem. However, Nvidia future plans include some solutions.

First, February 2007 will bring us another 2 G80 flavors. One will essentially be a cut down version of 8800 GTX, less powerful than even GTS. The other card will probably be a dual GPU configuration, something 7950 GX2 like. No more details are available on Nvidia's roadmap, but we can safely presume that G86 and G84 chipsets will follow, introducing the new mainstream contender (8600) as well as the value segment video card (8300). We'll just have to wait and see. Until then, happy shopping!
