Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Maps and Google. The common feature? They are all accessible from any handheld device but the mobile family is increasing as the parent company recently released Picasa Web Albums for mobile phones. What does this mean? Using this new flavor of the service you can access it from any location with a simple mobile phone connected to the Internet. In fact, you are able to do even more with your handheld device because the photos are automatically resized so you should be able to view them with ease. In addition, you can comment on the pictures by typing a message on your phone.

"With Picasa Web Albums for mobile devices, your favorite pictures are always with you. So next time you're at a loss for words when describing just how awesome, cute, or beautiful something really was, just grab your phone for visual backup. Thumbnails and photos are automatically re-sized for your device's screen, so pictures look good and download fast. All you need to get started is a phone with a web browser and a data plan," Ping Chen and Joel Onofrio, Software Engineers, said today.

The interesting fact about this update is that Google also added a new feature for the uploading process implemented into Picasa Web Albums that allows you to specify the location where you took the photos from. Moreover, you can show the place on a Google Maps, allowing you to create a nice looking mashup with your entire photo album.

However, the Google employee said that it is possible to view the photos with Google Earth, the downloadable mapping tool also powered by the search giant. If Picasa Web Albums and Google Maps are already compatible with the mobile phones, why wouldn't Google develop a new flavor of Google Earth to make it accessible from the handheld devices?
