Indie Mac and PC game developer Phelios has put one of its games up for free grabs, also releasing it on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch. While the Mac OS X version of Whack the Dead is free to download, the iPhone version of this “addictive” title is priced at $2.99.

Delivered in the nick of time for download during Halloween, Phelios' Whack the Dead is its second game for iPhone and iPod touch, and was created with the PTK game engine. PTK is a 2D rendering engine and SDK developed by Phelios that helps computer programmers create downloadable games in C++ that are easily portable to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It is currently used by more than 60 downloadable games, and is especially known for powering breakaway casual hits from funpause and Big Fish Games, such as Azada, Atlantis, Atlantis Sky Patrol, Mystic Inn and Fairies.

Whack the Dead has users wiping out the zombies with a kick in the head. The player has abilities like freezing monsters on sight, or blowing them to smithereens. In both the desktop version and the handheld port, players must be careful not to hurt the good guys. Yes, the game is not all gloomy.
