I knew that the PC market was doing poorly in terms of sales, both because the first quarter of every year is a slow season and because of the generally poor state of the IT industry in general.
What I didn't know for certain was how much damage those factors did to the PC segment during the first three months of the year.
Now I do, thanks to Gartner, and the answer is a lot. A fifth of the total actually.
That's right, PC shipments, at least in Western Europe, declined by 20.5%, as HP and Acer suffered drops of 30% (each), which was enough to offset the gains registered by Apple and, more importantly, Lenovo (once again the fastest-growing vendor).
By category, mobile shipments fell 24.6%, desktops dropped 13.8%, and professional PCs declines by 17.2%.
