Western Digital, one of the world's leading providers of storage solutions, has just announced the expansion of its WD AV-GP line of hard drives with the introduction of a new model, capable of delivering a massive 2TB of storage space, namely the industry's largest available drive to date. The WD AV-GP line has been designed to provide support for video and audio applications and enable users to expand the storage capacity of their DVRs, media servers or even surveillance video recording devices. Already available, the new WD AV-GP uses Western Digital's GreenPower Technology, which reduces the power consumption of the drive.

“Our consumer electronics customers require hard drives that consume less power, generate less heat and operate quietly,” said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. “Audio and video recording applications, such as DVRs, media servers, media centers and mainstream surveillance systems, often demand 24x7 operation from hard drives. Our drives meet the demanding requirements of these markets including higher reliability, universal compatibility, low power consumption and the ability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams.”

According to Western Digital, its WD AV-GP line of hard drives can deliver a power consumption reduction of up to 40 percent over standard drives, thanks to the integration of the GreenPower Technology. Specifically designed for the audio-video and surveillance markets, the new drives deliver a massive 2TB of storage space, offering support for up to 240 hours of HD video content. Additionally, as with other Western Digital hard drives, the new solution takes advantage of a number of Western Digital technologies, including SilkStream, IntelliSeek, IntelliPark and Preemptive Wear Leveling (PWL). These are designed to provide a quiet and reliable working environment.

The new WD AV-GP 2 TB hard drive is available from select e-tailers and distributors for an MSRP of US$299, according to Western Digital.
