Western Digital developed many hard disk drives until now, both regular and external/portable ones, but since some of the latter are less damage-proof than others, the outfit now chose to release an accessory instead of a new unit.

When it comes to external had disk drives, especially portable units, users definitely have cause to consider buying one.

After all, HDDs have very large storage capacities, even in small form factors (2.5 and 1.8 inches), and they are much less expensive that SSDs. Their storage space also lets them be more convenient that flash drives in various situations.

One of Western Digital's collections of such units is the My Passport line, which includes members of different endurance, capacity, performance and looks.

Nevertheless, if there is any area where HDDs have a disadvantage is that, due to their mechanical nature, they aren't particularly shock proof, nor is there resistance to moisture, spills and other mishaps very high.

The WD Nomad case is meant to make up for this drawback, offering protection against all the above for the My Passport Essential, My Passport Essential SE, My Passport Elite, My Passport for Mac, and My Passport SE for Mac.

"Consumers and professionals are more mobile than ever before and portable hard drives allow them to take their videos, photos and other files everywhere they go," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group.

"As the worldwide leader in external storage, WD understands how to protect data on hard drives, and we have put the same commitment to quality into the design of this rugged case. With the My Passport drive and WD Nomad rugged case, owners can rest assured they are doing everything they can to protect their digital lives whether they're traveling for fun or doing their daily commute."

Hikers, business travelers, photographers and anyone else who need to bring their digital equipment and files with them will be able to benefit from the purchase of the WD Nomad in some way.
