A specific set of conditions and timing sequences must be met to lose data

Hard drive maker Western Digital has released more clarification regarding data loss under OS X Mavericks, as it continues to work on a software update to patch the issue once and for all.

The problem, while extremely isolated, is a potentially fatal one for users with vital information stored on their computer’s hard drive.

Western Digital is doing everything in its power to contain the issue, and it has released several updates on its forum to inform customers of its progress.

The latest such update indicates that only a handful of customers are affected.

“WD has been tracking this issue closely through our WD Forum and through our Technical Support hotline and the occurrence rate of this event has been very low,” says the drive maker.

“A specific set of conditions and timing sequences between the OS and the WD software utilities has to occur to cause this issue,” it adds.

“Should this event occur, the data on the product can likely be recovered with a third party software utility if the customer stops using the device immediately after the OS X Mavericks (10.9) upgrade,” says WD.

The company is preparing to release updated versions of its WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and/or WD SmartWare software applications, to resolve the issue.

Customers who have either one of these programs installed on a computer that runs Mavericks are advised to uninstall said apps immediately, to prevent data loss.

“WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading until we provide an update to the applications,” says the company. “If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer.”

We’ll let you know when WD makes the patch available. In the meanwhile, drop a comment and let us know if you’ve been affected by this issue.
