Western Digital has just renewed its universal firmware updater through two new builds, namely version 3.2.4.2B for Windows operating systems, as well as version 3.2.4.4B for Mac OSes, which is compatible with most of the producer’s external hard drives.

These fresh packages reduce the standby power consumption for desktop HDDs, and resolve the issue where the drives wouldn’t be successfully mounted after performing a cold boot or exiting sleep mode.

The aforementioned changes are only valid through firmware 1.065, which is available for the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 My Book, My Book Essential, and My Book for Mac units, as well as for the My Passport, My Passport Edge, Edge for Mac, Ultra, Slim, and Air external hard drives.

The newly-released universal updaters also include other firmware versions for various devices. Thus, it's recommended to check the description page to make sure your external HDD is compatible and benefits from a new software build.

As for upgrading your product, simply download and extract the appropriate package for your system OS, run the available setup, click the “Continue” button, read and accept the EULA terms and conditions, and wait for the update utility to search for a new version.

Once found, select “Update Firmware,” wait a couple of minutes for the new update to be applied, and click “Exit” upon completion. Also, you must remove the USB and power cable, reconnect them after 10 seconds, and then perform a system reboot to make sure all changes take effect properly.

That being said, from the links below, follow the one that is suitable for your operating system, take into account all above-described steps, apply the new firmware, and enjoy your newly-updated external hard drive.
