Media players have come a long way since the early days of VCRs and DVRs, to the point where they can play, or display, more or less every sort of file there is.

Western Digital has just released such a media player, called WD TV Personal Edition and featuring support for Miracast.

That means that it not only does everything a media player does (play films/music), but can handle any file from USB storage devices (flash drives, HDDs, SSDs) and even wireless networks.

The WD TV Personal Edition does, after all, support Wi-Fi, allowing it to connect to TVs, PCs (Windows or OS X), phones, tablets, etc.

MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, and MOV file formats are supported, as is Miracast (stream the content of your phone to the big screen, in up to 1080p resolution).

Digital camcorders and cameras can directly interact with the media player as well, as can NAS (network-attached storage) devices.

The WD TV Personal Edition media player has a price of $100 / €74. You can download the WD TV Remote mobile app for free from Apple App Store and Google Play.
