Some time ago – in late November 2013, to be more precise – I told you about how, come January 2014, the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign would switch to being powered by solar.

Recent news on the topic says that workers have completed the solar tree installation intended to help green up this iconic welcome sign.

What's more, it appears that the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign has been running on said green energy source since last week's Wednesday.

Gizmag tells us that the sign's neon and incandescent lights now rely on as many as 18 photovoltaic cells to have their energy demands met.

The sign is said to look no different than when it did not use solar power to keep up and running. It does, however, stand as proof that the City of Las Vegas is committed to improving on its ecological footprint.

“We are delighted to harness that sunshine and use it to power such an iconic symbol of our community,” commented on this initiative Commissioner and Green Chips board member Chris Giunchigliani.

Furthermore, “The project will forever tie our storied past with the possibility of an exciting future powered by solar energy.”
