Scientists take pride in knowing loads of things about the world we live in. Still, every once in a while, something really wacky pops out seemingly out of nowhere, and brainiacs are left pretty much speechless.

This is precisely what happened when student Troy Alexander posted some pictures of a weird web structure that measures about 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) in diameter on Reddit.

Sources tell us that the pictures were taken in the Peruvian Amazon, close to the Tambopata Research Center. Troy first assumed that the structure, pictured above, was an unfinished moth cocoon.

However, once he stumbled upon several others of its kind, he was left with no choice except conclude that some creature was deliberately constructing them in this form.

Some say that, all things considered, the thing in the center is an egg. The fence-like structure around it is probably intended to protect it.

It is likely that such structures are created by a species of insect that has not yet been documented by science.
